Childhood cancer has changed our family's lives. So does camp. And so can you.
A diagnosis of childhood cancer or serious illness changes life in an instant. For kids and families, it can suddenly feel like everything is about cancer. Simple childhood joys like friendships, birthday parties, or sports teams being left behind in the need for medical appointments, hospital stays, and long absences from school. This can continue to be the case after 'remission' and the family is trying to move on from the horrible experience that has a distinct 'before' and 'after'.
We first met Campfire Circle at the Pediatric Medical Day Unit at Children's Hospital at LHSC. They provided crafts and interactions to Emma when she attended for chemo and procedures. Emma was feeling crummy all the time at that point and the Campfire staff would offer a soft and friendly face and leave a craft that Emma could do at her own pace and on her own time. We attended a couple of Campfire events while Emma was undergoing treatment, but she really didn't feel good at all for those many months. Now that we are trying to move on from acute cancer treatment to picking up the pieces, Campfire Circle has been invaluable. The four of us attended a Family Camp at Rainbow Lake last summer and that was amazing! This summer Emma went to her first sleepaway camp at week 2 of Campfire Circle and Alex got to go to the Sibling week at the end of the summer. The confidence and independence that these experiences have fostered in our kids has been incredible. We can't say enough positive things about Campfire Circle!!
