Give the gift of camp to kids affected by childhood cancer

Camp Ooch always held a special spot in Chloë's heart. She was first introduced to it through the hospital while she was an inpatient at Sick Kids. She created many great crafts and learned songs from her bedside. It provided a bit of joy during those long hospital stays. Later when she was 12 years old Chloë went on her first overnight camp session. This was a big deal. I flew with her down from Kenora to Toronto and put her on the bus which would take her to what became her most magical place. The first year she was terrified but I knew that she would love it. When I picked her up two weeks later I was greeted by an entirely different girl. She was bursting with joy, full of stories, more confident than I had ever seen before. She spoke about camp nonstop and was counting down the days until she could go again. Chloë was able to go two more summers and last summer participated in Camp in a Box. She also participated in two Sportinglife 10k Run for Ooch (she was pushed in her wheelchair). Chloë had many complex medical issues but this never deterred the staff from making sure that the best possible camping experience could be provided to her. Any obstacle was met with a solution so that she could enjoy the magic of camp, the magic of being a kid. Chloë always said that the great thing about Ooch was that she never had to explain to people what was wrong with her. It didn't matter there because everyone else was also affected by childhood cancer. Chloë passed away         June 27, 2021 after a 15 year fight with cancer. She was well known and well loved within the Camp Ooch family.  Chloë you will forever be a Sandpiper.

The joy of kids getting to be just kids…that’s the Magic of Camp.
